Denis Machnik is a Senior Manager + Co-Lead Climate Policy at adelphi. His work focuses on greenhouse gas reduction, carbon markets and the role of market-based mechanisms in climate protection.
Denis has in-depth knowledge in the design and implementation of climate protection measures in the electricity, transport and waste management sectors, as well as in the monitoring and reporting of achieved emission reductions based on international standards. He advises ministries and development agencies on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the development of low-emission strategies and the potential of climate financing. Denis has work experience in South Asia, East Asia and East Africa.
Before joining adelphi, Denis was a Project Manager at the climate protection organisation atmosfair gGmbH. There he was responsible for CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) and Gold Standard-certified climate action projects in Kenya, Tanzania, India and Honduras and developed innovative technology projects worldwide. Prior to that role, he worked at Thinkstep AG, where he created life cycle assessments for fossil fuels and energy budgets for thermal power plants. He also helped the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Beijing advise the Chinese government on energy efficiency and the energy transition in Germany, drafted a monitoring concept for a rural energy efficiency project for the NGO Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change (INECC), and provided support for the Bundesverband Erneuerbare Energie (BEE e.V.) in its daily political work.
Denis has an engineer's degree in technical environmental protection. During his studies at the Technische Universität Berlin, he specialised in air pollution control, life cycle assessment and sustainable development management. For his thesis he compiled sustainability indicators for the evaluation of the mobility sector in Mumbai, doing on-site research with funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
