The current study is part of the BMWi research project “Energiewende and international aspects – opportunities and challenges for German politics and industry”, which is being jointly carried out by adelphi, the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS) and Prognos AG. The goal of this substudy is to analyse the three core aspects of the worldwide expansion in renewable energies. This covers the megatrends of the renewable energies' expansion, as well as policy developments at the international level, and EU policy measures and developments in financing renewable energies. The analysis will focus on the megatrends regarding the decisive growth drivers for the expansion of renewable energies. Concerning international policy developments, the following aspects will be investigated: global renewable energy governance, trends in government funding models for renewable energies, the impact of international climate policy, and the relationship between free trade and renewable energies' expansion. With regards to the consideration of policy developments at the European level, EU instruments for funding renewable energies will chiefly be in focus. The analysis of these three core aspects will allow for conclusions regarding future market developments in renewable energies to be drawn, as well as estimates for the future export opportunities and strategies in the German renewable energies sector to be derived.
