Training of trainers for integrated waste management in Algeria

Inadequate waste management in Algeria leads to environmental impacts such as air pollution, soil, ground and surface water contamination, and sanitary risks for the local population. Algerian municipalities therefore hope to install an integrated waste and resource management system, including prevention, recycling, treatment, and sanitary disposal of their waste. In support of this, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) contracted adelphi to develop and implement a capacity building programme for local representatives and political decision-makers responsible for waste management in Algeria.

In cooperation with Pöyry Environment GmbH, Atlas Environment, and other local trainers, adelphi provided four training-of-trainers sessions on integrated waste and resource management, also developing supportive actions for implementation together with municipal representatives. Key themes were organisation and management of landfills, communication and awareness raising, optimisation and management of waste collection, and sanitary and safety requirements for waste collection, transportation and disposal. This capacity building programme was organised in the framework of GIZ’s regional capacity building programme for Maghrebi municipalities.
