Research demands in the context of climate change and security

Recent findings on climate change depict at least partially dramatic regional consequences. However, while in many reports the necessity of further research is highlighted, recommendations are rarely linked to current research programmes in Germany or on the European level. This is particularly the case where climate change affects security policy. In other words, as climate change and its far reaching consequences are practically undisputed, it is now necessary to transform these insights into concrete (research) policies.

Taking key challenges of climate change as a starting point, the main objective of this project was to systematically review research gaps where climate and security policy overlap. The main focus of the research included the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research’s programmes as well as other programmes. Based on the findings, recommendations for further research on climate change and security were made, plus selecting programmes for further advancement.
