This project aimed to develop a sustainable infrastructure for low carbon tourism in Pangandaran, Indonesia. This was to be achieved by the implementation of effective mitigation and adaptation measures. The existing Local Working Group for sustainable tourism development and the Destination Management Organisation (DMO), representing all relevant stakeholders, functioned as a managing, moderating and directing body.
The aim was to increase awareness and capacity building for all stakeholders and thereby to develop and establish best practice examples. Pilot measures were carried out, installing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies alongside integrated adaptation measures for the coastal ecosystems.
The results of these schemes were planned for transfer to other regions in Indonesia by the Ministry of Tourism. The project was funded via the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
