Climate change adaptation in India (AdaptCap)

The AdaptCap project promoted climate change adaptation, climate change mitigation and networks for disaster risk management in the coastal regions of the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, India. Part and parcel of this project were specific and innovative pilot measures which were developed and implemented in and amongst selected communities.

At the beginning of the project, detailed vulnerability and needs assessments were carried out to map the initial situation in different local settings. Based on the results, specific adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk management measures and approaches were developed and integrated into local plans. A total of 18 exemplary pilot measures were implemented as lighthouse projects that address the link between climate adaptation and mitigation (e.g. zero emission adaptation) and support the technology transfer into the region. The spectrum of pilot measures ranged from drinking water filtration and distribution system improvements over cyclone resistant causeway constructions, solar power backup for reverse osmosis plants, coastal bund constructions, pond renovations, water efficient horticulture and floriculture irrigation systems to climate-smart lighting. The most successful measures were then implemented in other local areas.

Training and advisory services for local stakeholders (training-of-trainers), communities as well as local climate change adaptation and mitigation guides for each community served to supplement this. Publicity and networking activities enhanced and improved the dissemination of experiences regionally, nationally and between the EU and India. Several publications have summarized the findings of the project for different stakeholders.
